You'll be missing out if you don't know! How to properly store camera batteries

The lifespan of a camera battery can be long or short depending on how it is used.
Should you store your battery fully charged? Or empty? Here's the "correct" way to store batteries, something you may not know!

Tips for storing camera batteries

The batteries used in cameras are "lithium-ion batteries." Although they are convenient rechargeable batteries, improper storage can cause them to deteriorate quickly, resulting in a loss of capacity.
Here are three things to keep in mind when storing lithium-ion batteries:

Tips for storing camera batteries
  • 1
When not in use, remove it from the camera and store it away.
  • 2
The best storage capacity is 30% to 50%
  • 3
Store in a cool, dark place (around 15°C).

If you will not be using the battery for more than a few months, remove it from the camera and store it in a protective cover. Avoid storing it in extremely hot or cold places, as this can cause the battery to deteriorate.

Even when the battery is not in use, it will gradually lose capacity due to natural discharge. Leaving the battery in the camera fully discharged (0%) can cause deterioration. Be careful not to let the battery reach 0% capacity! As a guideline, charge it to 30% to 50% once every six months.

How to use the protective cover effectively

A protective cover protects the battery contacts, preventing them from coming into contact with metal or other objects and causing a short circuit.

How to use the protective cover effectively

Did you know that you can tell whether a battery is charged or used by the direction in which you attach this protective cover? For example, when attaching it to a charged battery, make sure the window in the protective cover overlaps with the blue sticker on the battery, but if it's used, turn it 180 degrees and attach it, and you'll be able to tell at a glance.

How to know the deterioration of the battery?

Select "Battery Information" from the camera's MENU

You can easily check the battery level in the camera by selecting "Battery Information" from the camera's MENU.

Battery Information
  • 1
Type of battery or household power source in use
  • 2
    Battery level indicator
  • 3
Number of shots taken with the battery in use (reset when charging)
  • 4
    Battery deterioration status

    ■■■: Not deteriorated

    ■■□: Slightly deteriorated

■□□: We recommend replacing the battery

When you start to think that your battery is starting to deteriorate, it's time for maintenance!

We recommend Canon's maintenance service, "Anshin Maintenance," provided by technical staff!
